There is a specific complaint we hear four or five times every winter. A player bought a fairway wood in July, loved it, and now cannot get it off the ground. Nothing about the club changed. The fairway did.
Turf interaction is the least discussed and most consequential part of fitting a fairway wood. Everybody talks about launch and spin, which are outputs. Almost nobody talks about what the bottom of the club does to the ground on the way to the ball, which is the input that produces them.
Three pieces of sole geometry
Width
Measured front to back. A wide sole distributes the head's downward force over a larger area, which resists digging on soft ground and makes the club feel stable through impact. The cost is that the leading edge sits higher above the ground at address, which on a tight lie means the equator of the ball can end up below the bottom groove and you catch it thin.
Camber
The curvature of the sole, both from front to back and from heel to toe. Camber is what lets a head rock through the turf rather than plough it. A heavily cambered sole presents a smaller contact patch to the ground at any given moment, so it slices in and out more cleanly. Flat soles feel more stable at address and considerably less forgiving once they touch anything.
Leading edge radius
How sharply the front of the sole curls upward. A rounded leading edge glances off firm ground; a squared one catches it. On dormant Bermuda over sandy soil, this single detail separates a club that works from a club that gets teed up on par fives.
What changes between the seasons here
From roughly May through October, Central Florida Bermuda grows aggressively. It is thick, it sits the ball up on a small cushion of grass, and there is moisture in the profile. In these conditions a wider, flatter sole works well: the cushion holds the ball above the leading edge, and the width keeps the head from digging into softer ground.
From December through March the same grass goes dormant. It stops growing, thins out, and lies flat. The ball now sits directly on a hard, sandy surface with almost no cushion beneath it. Three things follow. The leading edge is closer to the ball's equator, so thin strikes become more likely. The ground is firmer, so a wide sole no longer needs to spread load and instead just holds the head higher. And on the sandier properties around Orlando, if the leading edge does catch, it catches on something abrasive that stops the head almost instantly.
The overseeded courses complicate it further. Ryegrass overseed gives you a temporary cushion again from about December, but it is thinner and more slippery than summer Bermuda and it behaves differently through the strike. A club fitted on overseed in January will feel different on the non-overseeded municipal down the road the following weekend.
How we test for it
Chalk on the sole, twenty swings off the tee line, then read the wear pattern. It is not sophisticated and it is remarkably informative.
- A stripe along the leading edge means you are contacting the ground before the ball. The club is either too wide, too flat, or you need a shallower delivery.
- Wear concentrated at the back of the sole means the trailing edge is hitting first and bouncing the head upward into a thin strike. Usually a camber problem.
- A clean band across the middle is what you want. The sole is doing its job.
- Heel-biased wear often indicates a lie angle issue rather than a sole one, which is a much cheaper fix.
We also watch the turf itself. A well-fitted fairway wood bruises the grass. It should not take a divot in the way an iron does, and if it consistently does, the club is wrong for how you deliver it.
Practical recommendations for players here
Bias narrow, bias cambered
For someone playing the majority of their golf in Central Florida, we will generally recommend the narrower and more cambered option of two otherwise equivalent heads. The reasoning is asymmetric risk: the winter penalty for too much width is severe, and the summer penalty for slightly too little width is mild.
Consider more loft than tradition suggests
A 5-wood or a 7-wood has a shallower face and a smaller, more cambered sole than a 3-wood, and it sits lower to the ground at address. For players who struggle from tight lies, going up in loft solves the turf problem and the launch problem simultaneously. There is nothing embarrassing about a 7-wood and we will say so as often as needed.
Get it checked in the other season
If you were fitted in summer, come back in January for twenty minutes on dormant grass. We do not charge for it. Occasionally the answer is a different head, but more often it is a small lie adjustment or simply knowing to play the ball a fraction back in winter.
The uncomfortable conclusion
A fairway wood cannot be fitted properly indoors. Not partially, not approximately. The mat removes the variable that determines whether the club works, and every number the monitor produces afterwards is describing a shot that could not happen on a golf course. If a studio offers you a fairway wood fitting and there is no grass involved, you are being sold launch data about a situation that does not exist.
