Seventy-five minutes on a rolling surface we can shim to introduce genuine break. The putter is used on more shots than any other club in the bag and is fitted less often than any of them.
Your Putter Is Too Long
Not necessarily yours specifically, but statistically it is a fair opening bet. The retail standard settled at thirty-four inches decades ago for reasons of inventory rather than anatomy, and the majority of adults we measure are better served somewhere between thirty-two and thirty-three and a half.
Length is not a comfort question. It sets where your eyes sit relative to the ball, and eye position determines what you perceive as square. A putter an inch and a half too long pushes the eyes inside the target line, which makes a square face look open, which makes you aim right and then pull it to compensate. That entire chain of errors is fixed with a hacksaw and twenty dollars of labour.
So we measure length and lie first, before discussing any head, and a decent proportion of sessions are effectively resolved in the first fifteen minutes.
Matching the Head to the Arc, Not to the Trend
Every putter head has a toe hang, which is simply how the head balances when you rest the shaft on a finger. A face-balanced head resists rotation and suits a stroke that travels nearly straight back and through. A strongly toe-hung head wants to rotate and suits a stroke with a pronounced arc. Putting a face-balanced mallet in the hands of a player with a big arc forces them to fight the club through every stroke, and they will describe the result as feeling blocked without knowing why.
We measure the arc with the camera over about thirty strokes and then hand you three heads with matched specs but different balance characteristics. The one that stops requiring effort is usually obvious within a dozen putts.
Hosel and offset
A plumber's neck, a flow neck, a double bend and a centre shaft all change where your hands sit relative to the face and how much of the head you see at address. This is partly a performance question and substantially a perception one, and perception is legitimate in putting in a way it is not elsewhere.
Loft and the first four inches
A putter needs enough loft to lift the ball out of its own resting depression and get it rolling, and no more. Too much and the ball hops before it rolls, which on Bermuda greens with a strong grain means the first bounce takes the line with it. We check your shaft lean at impact and set static loft to deliver between one and two degrees, which frequently means bending the putter away from what it was stamped.
Grip
Larger grips reduce wrist activity, which helps players who flick and harms players who rely on feel. We try three sizes and let the distance control tell us. It is a fifteen minute test that reliably changes somebody's mind.
Grain Is a Local Variable Too
Most greens around Orlando are Bermuda, and Bermuda grows toward the setting sun and toward drainage. That grain grabs the ball in the first few inches of roll far more than bentgrass does, which makes launch conditions matter more here than they would further north.
Loft Matters More
A ball that hops for six inches before rolling is at the mercy of the grain. Correct loft gets it rolling sooner and holds the intended line longer.
Heavier Heads Help
Grain resists the ball, particularly into the grain on a slow afternoon green. A heavier head delivers pace with a shorter stroke, which is easier to repeat.
