I keep a spreadsheet of every carry chart we produce. Over the last three seasons the median gap between a player's longest reliably struck iron and their shortest usable fairway wood has been twenty-eight yards. The median gap everywhere else in the same bags has been eleven. That is not a distribution; that is a hole.
It exists for a structural reason rather than because golfers are careless. Iron lofts have been strengthened continuously for two decades, largely so that manufacturers can advertise distance gains. Fairway wood lofts have barely moved, because a 15-degree 3-wood is a 15-degree 3-wood and always has been. The two ends of the range have drifted apart and the space in between has quietly widened.
How the arithmetic goes wrong
A 2005 set had a 5-iron at about 27 degrees and a 4-iron at 24. A current game improvement set may have the 5-iron at 22 and the 4-iron at 19. Meanwhile the 5-wood in the bag is still 18 or 19 degrees. On paper the 4-iron and the 5-wood now overlap.
In practice they do not, because loft is not the only thing determining carry. The 5-wood is longer, launches higher off a deeper centre of gravity, and produces meaningfully more clubhead speed. So the wood carries fifteen or twenty yards further despite similar loft, and the player, quite reasonably, stops carrying the 4-iron because it does not seem to do anything the 5-iron does not.
Now the gap is between the 5-iron and the 5-wood, and it is thirty yards wide. It sits at roughly 185 to 215 for a lot of the mid handicap players we see, which is precisely the range you need for second shots on par fives and approach shots on long par fours.
Why nobody notices
Because the compensation is invisible from inside. Faced with a 200 yard shot and no 200 yard club, players do one of two things. They take the 5-wood and try to hit it softly, which produces a deceleration pattern and a strike that is worse than usual. Or they take the 5-iron and force it, which produces a swing that is faster than their normal one and equally unreliable.
Both results get filed under inconsistency. Neither gets filed under equipment, because there is no obvious moment where the player thinks about the missing club. The gap is defined by absence, and absence is hard to notice.
Measuring your own
You do not strictly need us for this, though the numbers are more reliable when somebody else is recording them. What you need is carry distance, not total distance, for every club from the 6-iron up, averaged over at least eight decent strikes each. Ignore your best shot with each club; the average is what you play golf with.
Then write the numbers down in order and look at the differences. Anything above about fifteen yards between adjacent clubs is worth addressing. Anything above twenty-five is costing you shots most rounds.

Note what actually happened there. The 5-wood came out of the bag entirely and was replaced by a 7-wood and a hybrid. The player did not gain a single yard at the top end; the 3-wood even went three yards backwards after we shortened it. What they gained was two usable clubs in the range where they previously had none, and the scoring difference over the following season was, by their own account, about two strokes a round.
What usually fills the hole
- A hybrid at the right loft, chosen to land in the middle of the measured gap rather than to match a number.
- A 7-wood, which fills the higher half of the gap and is easier from rough than anything else in the category.
- Both, if the gap is genuinely thirty yards, funded by removing a club at the bottom of the bag you rarely use.
- Occasionally nothing at all, if you play a course where that yardage simply never comes up. It happens, and we will say so.
The other end of the bag
While you are measuring, check the wedges. The same loft strengthening that opened the top of the bag has opened the bottom of it: a 43-degree pitching wedge and a 56-degree sand wedge leave thirteen degrees between two clubs, which is a forty yard hole in the range where you are trying to score. Fixing that is cheaper and often more valuable than fixing the top.
