Two players stood in Bay 1 last spring within a mile an hour of each other on clubhead speed. One carried 248. The other carried 219. Same speed, same ball, same afternoon. The entire difference sat in one measurement, and it is the measurement that most amateurs have never seen a number for.
Attack angle is the vertical direction the clubhead is travelling at the moment it meets the ball. Negative means descending. Positive means ascending. For every club except the driver, negative is correct and desirable, because you need to strike the ball before the ground. The driver is the sole exception, and it is the exception precisely because the ball is sitting up on a tee.
Why it matters so much
An ascending strike does two useful things at once. It raises launch angle without adding loft, and it reduces spin loft, which cuts backspin. Higher launch plus lower spin is the definition of an efficient driver flight. You get the ball up quickly and it stays in the air on a flatter trajectory rather than climbing and stalling.
A descending strike does the reverse on both counts simultaneously. Lower launch, more spin. Those two errors compound rather than cancel, which is why the distance penalty is so large. The rough figure people quote is around four yards of carry per degree of attack angle at typical amateur speeds, and in our bay the number has generally held up.
What we measure, and how
Radar reports attack angle directly, but the number is noisier than people assume, particularly on thin strikes and particularly if the unit is not aligned properly. So we cross-check three ways.
- The radar figure, averaged over at least fifteen shots rather than read off a single swing.
- Strike height on the face, from the impact camera and from tape. Players hitting up strike above centre; players hitting down strike low. If the radar and the tape disagree, something is wrong with the setup.
- Tee height sensitivity. We change tee height by half an inch and watch what happens. A player with a genuinely upward strike gains from a higher tee; a player striking downward gets worse, sometimes dramatically.
That third test is the one clients remember, because it is immediate and visible without any screen interpretation.
What equipment can and cannot do
Cannot: make you hit up
No head, shaft or grip will convert a descending strike into an ascending one. Attack angle is a product of where your low point sits relative to the ball, and low point is a function of body position and sequencing. This is instruction territory and we say so plainly rather than sell you something.
Can: reduce the damage while it is negative
Plenty of good players hit down on the driver and always will. For them the equipment brief is different: keep spin manageable despite the unfavourable spin loft. That usually means a lower spinning head with weight positioned forward, a shaft that does not add dynamic loft late, and slightly less static loft than the launch chart would suggest.
Can: help the setup that produces the change
Length is the lever people overlook. A driver that is too long forces the hands to work further from the body and frequently pushes the low point back toward the middle of the stance. Shortening by half an inch has, in our records, been followed by an improvement in attack angle in roughly a third of cases, not because the club is magic but because the setup became repeatable.
Can: change ball position and tee height, at zero cost
Ball forward off the lead heel, tee high enough that the equator of the ball sits level with the top of the crown, and a small amount of upper body tilt away from the target. We walk through this in every driver session and it is free. About one in five players picks up a positive attack angle from setup alone within twenty balls.
Targets, roughly
We hesitate to publish target numbers because they get treated as goals rather than as descriptions, and chasing a number produces worse golf than chasing a good strike. With that caveat, this is the general shape of things for a mid-speed amateur.

Note the last row. It is possible to have too little spin. A ball with under about 1,800 rpm has nothing holding it up in the second half of its flight and drops steeply. Players who have worked hard on hitting up sometimes overshoot into this territory and then wonder why the extra height did not produce extra distance.
The short version
Find out what your attack angle is before you spend money on a driver. If it is meaningfully negative, that is the constraint, and equipment can only manage the consequences rather than remove them. If it is positive, you have more room to work with than the launch charts assume and you should probably be testing more loft, not less.
