Loft Is Not Launch Angle

Somebody comes in with a driver that flies low. They have already been to a big box store, where a helpful person suggested a head with two more degrees of loft on it. They bought it. The ball still flies low, and now it spins more and goes shorter. This happens perhaps twice a month and it is always the same misunderstanding underneath.

Static loft is a manufacturing specification. It is the angle of the face relative to the shaft when the club is sitting on a bench doing nothing. Launch angle is the vertical direction the ball actually departs in, and it is produced at impact by a combination of variables that static loft is only one member of.

The three things that make launch angle

Roughly speaking, and ignoring some refinements that do not change the argument, launch angle comes out of three inputs.

  • Delivered loft. Static loft after your handle position and shaft lean at impact have modified it. Forward shaft lean reduces it; a trailing handle increases it.
  • Attack angle. Whether the clubhead is travelling upward or downward through the ball, and by how many degrees. This is the input people forget.
  • Strike height on the face. Because of the vertical curvature built into every driver face, contact above centre launches higher with less spin, and contact below centre does the opposite.

Static loft feeds into the first of those three. It does not touch the other two at all. So when a player's low flight is being caused by a negative attack angle or a persistently low strike, adding static loft addresses none of the cause and brings an unwanted side effect with it.

Adding loft to fix a low flight caused by a downward strike is like adding sugar to fix a coffee that is too hot. Something changed, but not the thing you were complaining about.

Why the side effect is the real problem

Spin loft is the angular gap between where the clubface is pointing vertically and where the clubhead is travelling vertically. A face delivered at 13 degrees with the head moving downward at 3 degrees produces a spin loft of 16. The same face with the head moving upward at 3 degrees produces a spin loft of 10.

Spin loft is the primary driver of backspin. More spin loft, more spin. And when you add static loft to a driver without changing anything about how you deliver it, you have widened that gap. The ball launches marginally higher and spins considerably more, which for a driver is usually a net loss. The flight becomes ballooned rather than penetrating, it climbs and then falls out of the air, and total distance drops even though the launch number on the screen went up.

We see this pattern most clearly with players in the 88 to 98 mile per hour range who strike down on the ball by two or three degrees. They typically arrive spinning around 3,400 rpm. Two more degrees of static loft takes them past 3,900, and every yard gained in the air is given back in the last third of the flight.

What to change instead

Move the low point, if you can

The highest-leverage fix is to stop hitting down on the driver. Ball position forward of centre, a touch more tilt away from the target at address, and a tee height that presents the top half of the ball above the crown all push the attack angle upward. This is not equipment work and we will tell you so honestly; a good instructor will sort it faster than we can.

Move the strike up the face

Where equipment does help. A higher tee, a slightly shorter shaft to tighten the pattern, and in some cases a head with a deeper face all shift the average contact point upward. Half an inch of strike height is worth more launch and less spin than two degrees of static loft, and it costs nothing.

Reposition the head weight

Modern adjustable heads let you move mass back and low, which raises launch and adds a little spin, or forward, which lowers spin. Most players who think they need loft actually need the weight moved rearward and slightly toward the heel, and that adjustment takes ninety seconds with a torque wrench.

Then, if it is still needed, adjust loft

Loft is not useless. It is simply last on the list rather than first. Once attack angle, strike height and weight position are as good as they are going to get, adding or removing a degree of static loft is a legitimate fine adjustment. Starting there is the error.

The number that actually predicts distance

If you want a single figure to watch, watch spin loft. Efficient driver flights come from a small spin loft delivered with speed. That means getting the attack angle up toward level or positive, keeping delivered loft in a sensible range, and finding the middle of the face more often. Everything else is commentary.

What that looks like practically for a player around 95 miles an hour is an attack angle somewhere between level and plus three, a launch angle in the low to mid teens, and spin under 2,800. None of those numbers is achieved by shopping. They are achieved by measuring what you currently do, changing one variable at a time, and being willing to accept that the answer might be a shorter shaft rather than a new driver.
